VizDice: A Visual Adventure
Develop your data visualization skills by playing!
Description of the workshop
VizDice is an interactive online data visualization workshop that turns learning into an exciting game.
Participants create their characters, and receive tasks using multi-faceted cubes. Over two hours, participants create complex diagrams, developing their skills and creative thinking.
  • 2 hours
    The next meeting:
You can sign up in the pre-recording sheet
  • Online
    Format: Online (Zoom)
There is a limit on the size of the group
  • Theory
I'll tell you about the different ways of encoding data
  • Practice
We will build unusual diagrams based on random tasks
What will the participants get
  • Online workshop for 2 hours
We meet on weekday evenings from 20:00 to 22:00 MSK and practice creating unusual visualizations.
  • Let's study the visual attributes
You will gain knowledge about visual attributes - different methods of encoding information - and how they work, and how they are used in data visualization and data art.
  • Practice with different tools
The exercise can be done using any tools you like: pen, pen, markers, colored liners, pencils, rulers, compasses, Figma, Miro, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop.
You need to be able to draw in different colors.
  • Fun!
Let's collect your character, I roll colored cubes for you, which will determine the complexity of your task - there is a completely random, someone will be lucky, and someone will not!
But the more difficult it is, the more interesting it is!
If you participate multiple times, you will be able to participate in the League of adventurers and upgrade your character!
The composition of the workshop
Let's study data encoding methods
I will tell you about different methods of encoding data - namely, visual attributes, teach you how to use them, and explain which and when it is better to use them.
Let's roll the dice!
Literally, with the help of a variety of cubes, we will determine an individual task for everyone. The task will contain a data set with a list of variables and their encoding method.
Project development
Everyone works on their project for an hour, we all discuss the process together and share sketches. I also create something with you and answer questions, and help if necessary.
Results
In the end, we summarize the results, evaluate the resulting projects - how interesting, easy to read, and successful they were. Everyone who completes the visualization gets experience points and gets into the Adventure league! Where you can upgrade your dataviz characters and get new levels, solving more and more difficult tasks!
Examples of the results of participants' practical tasks!
The players used different tools, styles and methods to encrypt the data!
The League of Dataviz Adventurers!
We have already held several events! So you can see the first results! Participants get points for their adventures - and the more often they participate and the more interesting projects they collect, the more points they get! And I'm collecting their results in the Adventurer League table!
Participant Reviews
  • In 2 hours of the webinar, we learned the necessary theory about how data visualization works, and also solved some data visualization tasks! I especially liked how the interactive part was organized. We all worked in the same online space. First, we created our own characters (see mine in the images attached to the post).

Then, we had to create a simple visualization from a random data set using specific elements (which is where the challenge lies)!

    Summary and Plans
I really enjoyed the learning format, Natalia’s dedication, and the high-quality preparation! I’ve been thinking about conducting a similar workshop for a while, and we are already discussing topic options and their content.

  • "The idea of turning the creative search for new forms of visualization into a game is incredibly engaging. I hope this event becomes regular. The theory was interesting with relevant examples, and the practical part was fantastic. A huge thanks for the game board in Miro as well. Everything was very well thought out, adding interest and excitement to the game."

    "Really loved the avatars :)"

"I liked the examples, visualization concepts, datasets, and of course the atmosphere! The overall level of preparation was superb!"

"Very lively storytelling, engaging presentation of the material, a creative approach to practice, and a lot of support throughout :)"

"The opportunity to exercise creativity and skills, as well as information on available attributes."

Reviews of my lectures
  • "The topic was non-standard, it was interesting to get a fresh look at the area related to working with data. There was also an honest lecture from a person who was passionate about the topic. This passion and sincerity with which Natalia Kiselyova talked about various projects in art, marketing, and business related to data visualization and data art touched many of our employees, which they noted in the feedback. Thank you very much!"
